The AK Governor
Okay...erm, I can hardly stand this...I just listened to her speech. She's the Governor of my state but I didn't vote for her (rather for her opposition). And now she's the VP candidate? I half expected my blog to be over-run by the rest of you by now asking the questions I have gotten in person such as "What is competitive snowmachining?" I've had to walk a fine line at the bookstore cloaking my politics under the multi-interpretable response "I'm still in shock" and I am, it's no lie.

I guess everyone is, she looks inoffensive and therefore dangerous. Let's hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI was going to ask, but you seemed preoccupied with real life. But since you raised the issue, to what extent did she clean up the resources industry, and how much was done by the feds? Is it surprising that some companies (e.g. Nova Gold) have slashed their exploration budgets while she's out of town? Or is that just seasonal?
ReplyDeletehere, here. what is true? what is a stretch?
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction was, "Is this a joke?" Next was, "Aren't there any Republican women we've heard of who could have been chosen?" Not that I mind too much, because the more she's a liability, the greater our chances of avoiding a Republican president.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what your thoughts are, as the only Alaskan connection I have! Her speech last night scared the bejeesus out of me. "Don't worry, plenty of oil in Alaska!". I'm hearing all kinds of other things about abuses of power, attempts to ban books at the local library (Harry Potter etc).
ReplyDeleteI'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this! What is the general perception of her in her home state? And what do your Alaskan friends and acquaintances think of her?
ReplyDeleteI watched the Republican convention last night. I watched that roaring crowd, heard it chanting "Drill, baby, drill!", and realized that yes, they really do live in a completely different universe from the one that I and my friends inhabit.
I hope you share more of your info and thoughts of her...
ReplyDeleteShe sounds like an environmental nightmare.
I hope you'll consider speaking openly about your impressions.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, her policies make me nervous.
i wondered how you felt, although I couldn't imagine you were a Palin supporter. Give the rest of us some good, solid scary facts about her policies that we can share with others, would ya? it's hard to trust what the media is putting out there. Give it to us from someone who had to live with it.
ReplyDeleteWe're scared... very, very scared... over here in Australia. I'd love to read some thoughts on her. As they say, she would be just a heart-beat away from the Presidency.
ReplyDeleteLike the rest of your readers I was waiting and hoping you would write a well measured and thought out piece -as you usually do- with you impressions about Gov Palin.
ReplyDeleteI was struck dumb by the announcement. Having listened to her, I can't help feeling she is a party puppet being used for political gain...or maybe she is that ambitious. Please let us know your opinion....
I've been meaning to ask your opinion as well, so now that you've brought it up, please share!
ReplyDeleteOver here in England the commentators all seem to be impressed with Palin. Well it's nothing to do with me - just the manifest destiny of USA to fulfil god's inscrutable purpose: that's if the world doesn't end Wednesday with the godless scientists in Geneva playing with Promethean fire.
ReplyDeleteI found this today on her welcome back to Anchorage: http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/14/alaska-women-reject-palin-rally-is-huge/
ReplyDeletejonzie, she is very dangerous.
ReplyDeletechuck, she hasn't really cleaned it up. She just didn't take personal bribes. Oh and she insisted on a different comapny then usual for the AK oil pipeline.
jen, check out AK Muckraker...I post the link 9/14.
dot, unfortunately I am not sure if she will be a liability.
cath, indeed...she is one scary woman!
bean-mom, all of my AK friends are horrified too. She may have a high approval rating but it's only about half the state.
albatross, indeed she is. Polar bears are definately something she'd like to get rid of.
ms chica, considering...but yes, she makes me nervous too!
maypole, I'm going to send you to someone who can do that better than I. See 9/14 post.
parlance, I think she would be closer if her current sway on McCain is any indication.
doris rose & sciencegirl, okay, okay! Working on something.
vincent, either we all survived Wednesday or we're all living in an alternate Universe :) Really, the British are impressed???
gabe, indeed - that's one of my favorite blogs. Thanks for bringing it up!! I think I need to post it somewhere prominent for the next month or so!
I feel your pain. I feel the same way about W.
